ACOUSTIC AFRICA (DVD)

feat. MADALA KUNENE, GREG GEORGIADES, ASHISH JOSHI, BERNARD MNDAWENI, MABI THOBEJANE, L.A.P. (LIVE AFRICAN PERCUSSION), CARLO MOMBELLI, ERNEST MOTHLE & NTOMBE THONGO & HIS AFRICAN BAND

South Africa has too few festivals and musical events dedicated to showcasing the vast variety of traditional, world and jazz music the country has to offer. As a label, we at MELT 2000 strongly supported and promoted different facets of music and artist collaborations since the birth of the new democratic South Africa in 1994. It was back in 1997 when Pascal Letellier on behalf of the French city of Nantes showcased the most elaborate representation of South African culture - an event so beautiful that participating artists themselves were surprised to experience the rich variety of their own Rainbow nation's heritage. With the help of Pascal we recorded and filmed many of the participating acts. Material from Amampondo, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Busi Mhlongo and Madala Kunene that has now found its way onto DVD releases.

Exactly seven years later my friend Ananda introduced me to another Frenchman, Jean Bourdin (then director of the Alliance Francaise in Pretoria) who told me of his plans for a small, intimate festival sponsored by the Alliance and the IFAS (Institut Français d'Afrique du Sud). I immediately asked him if I could make some additional programme suggestions and expressed my wish to record and film the event.

Jean's musical program found form in the 2004 Fort West Village Heritage & Cultural Festival which was built around four musicians born or raised in Tshwane (Pretoria). These are Ernest Mothle, Carlo Mombelli and the two artists to whom this DVD is dedicated, Greg Hadjiyorki Georgiades and Madala Kunene. And yet despite their common roots, the diversity of their musical influences and inspirations is awesome. The team gathered with cameras and stacks of recording gear, some of which was flown in from London by Chris Lewis - a man whose expertise with acoustic music I certainly did not want to miss.

Another journey and a new era of collaborations had begun.

Watch this space.

Amampondo (DVD)

alt Amampondo - 25 Years of Skins

This DVD of mostly unreleased footage by Amampondo, South Africa's ambassador for 3 decades of traditional drum and marimba music, was compiled with the many supporters of the group in mind who for decades haven't missed an opportunity to see the group live. There is no better way to experience the energy and beauty of acoustic dance music then having such a large group of drummers, marimba players and singers being united on one stage giving themselves over to the forces and the spirit of collective music making.

We'd like to thank all the people and institutions who made it possible for this fantastic group to tour the world for the past 25 years and a special thanks goes to Chris Lewis and the various film makers for mixing and shooting so many of their live shows whilst keeping an eye on recording performances, thus creating a library of highly precious raw and undiluted Amampondo music.

Mick Raubenheimer comments on the release:

"Viewing the two recenttly released MELT 2000 DVD compilations I was struck anew by the sheer wealth of this label's history. If the spirit of "modern" South African Jazz were to be time-capsuled for the hypothetical reference of distant future species, MELT 2000's compilation would head the list. Where the major distributors of local Jazz opted for curio - shop obviousnes, snagging well-known artists (brands) and releasing only their most tourist-gratifying works,  M.E.L.T. 2000 has been facilitating, and gathering, those artists with an original voice and a passion to inter-explore other venues of sound. Which, come to think, might just be the very definition of that tricksygenre called Jazz"

Moses Taiwa Molelekwa - Live @ Nantes '97 (DVD)

altLIVE AT THE FIN DE SIECLE FESTIVAL, NANTES 1997 (DVD)

1997's gathering of some 380 artists from South Africa on the shores of the Atlantic in the west of France must be earmarked as the most impressive show of our country's culture beyond our borders. The idea of the Festival du Fin de Siecle was to invite to Nantes all kinds of cultural representatives from three of the world's great cities, in order to illustrate the creativity of each of these places at the dawn of the third millennium. The festival began in October 1997, with a celebration of Johannesburg, representing Africa, continent of roots.Beautiful costumes and great visual performances made the festival a unique event.
Several of the musicians like the late Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Busi Mhlongo, Madala Kunene, Pops Mohamed and Amampondo that were invited to perform at Nantes were associated with MELT. The Melt crew recorded and filmed all the shows for future release starting the series with this unique recording of the late Moses Taiwa Molelekwa.
Moses Molelekwa arrived fresh from the studio in Johannesburg where he put the finishing touches on his then eagerly anticipated CD Genes and Spirits. Moses played in different formations: with Zolani Mkiva, with Sibongile Khumalo both in Paris and Nantes and with his band at La Tour a Plomb. Moses was accompanied by Khaya Mahlangu on sax and flute, Sello Montwedi on drums and Fana Zulu on bass.
Feature: A breathtaking poem written by Monk Molelekwa  Moses father.
A DVD of Moses Taiwa Molelekwa's performance in Nantes with different tracks and lots of invaluable footage of the late Moses is now available.
